Chennai Flood: BSNL Gives Free Calls To Residents, Airtel Offers Talktime

Even as torrential rains wreck havoc in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu, those affected need all the help that they can possibly get in this time of need. And help is indeed pouring in from across the country. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured all help and cooperation will be extended to victims, Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday announced that state-owned telecommunication company BSNL will not charge its customers in Chennai for one week starting today.

Bharti Airtel has also announced that it will provide free talk time with a credit balance of 10 minutes for Airtel-to-Airtel calling and 50MB mobile data to its customers in flood-hit Chennai.

Meanwhile, online recharge platform Paytm has announced a service that will allow people to recharge a friend’s phone for free. Residents can call on a designated number (18001030033) and share the mobile number that they want to get topped-up. Rs.30 recharge will instantly be facilitated free of cost.

Zomato and Practo have also jumped into relief efforts. While restaurant search and discovery service Zomato has announced a ‘Meal for flood relief’ campaign where for every meal a customer buys, Zomato will buy the same for flood victims; health app service Practo has put together a list of verified doctors and hospitals that people can call and go to.

According to Practo, the list will be updated every hour, based on the crowd sourcing inputs they generate through this initiative.

Twitter and Google are also doing their fare bit to aid those affected by the natural calamity in Chennai. While Google has opened up its crisis response tool that puts together all necessary information about the floods including shelters to go to etc based on its search algorithms, people are using micros-blogging website Twitter to catch live updates that others are tweeting. The #ChennaiRainsHelp hash tag is trending on Twitter and helping people get up-to-date information.
