Microsoft Says It Is Committed To Windows 10 Phones

Microsoft has said that it is committed to supporting Windows 10 on mobile and it is currently in the process of developing its next generation smartphone models.

In an leaked internal email, Microsoft’s head of Windows and devices, Terry Myserson clears the air over the company’s commitment towards the smartphone platform and says that ‘it is committed to deliver Windows 10 on mobile devices with small screen running ARM processors’.

“We are currently in development of our next generation products and I wanted to reconfirm our commitment to Windows 10 Mobile.

We believe in this product’s value to business customers and it is our intention to support the Windows 10 Mobile platform for many years,” he said in the leaked memo, which was published by Windows Central , which is blog that is dedicated to covering all things Microsoft.

This comes on back of a horrid quarter for Microsoft’s Lumia smartphone business which saw sales of its devices nose dive from 8.6 million units in Q2 of 2015 to just 2.3 million units in Q2 of 2016.

Microsoft has also started giving away the Lumia 950 smartphone away for free with the more expensive Lumia 950 XL smartphone in the US, which is a sign that Microsoft is clearing inventory. This has raised concerns regarding the company’s commitment towards the platform.

Even at the BUILD developer conference, which happened earlier in the month, Microsoft didn’t touch much upon Windows 10 for mobile. In an interview with the Verge, Myserson, in fact, said that it wasn’t a core focus for the company, but just a ” part of the family”.

Microsoft is highly rumoured to launch a Surface phone in April 2017, alongside a big update for Windows 10 for mobile called RedStone 2. According to Windows Central , Microsoft is waiting for the completion of the Windows 10 RedStone 2 update and by April 2017 it will be ready to launch the phone.

It will be an update to RedStone 1, which Microsoft has officially unveiled as the Windows 10 anniversary update.

Reportedly, the Surface phone will be the ‘best phone for productivity’ and it will be the ‘most secure smartphone in the world’. With the RedStone 2 update, Microsoft is looking at expanding the Çontinum’ feature where the phone will also be able to run classic Windows Win32 apps.

As of now, Win32 apps new an Intel based x86 processor, which are not commonly used in smartphones, but Microsoft is looking at ways of making that happen.

Rumours have suggested that either Microsoft could use an Intel processor for this to happen, but a recent hardware specifications leak from Microsoft’s website suggested that it could use the successor to Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and 8GB RAM.

At BUILD, Microsoft also unveiled a migration tool for Win32 apps so that they can be converted to modern style WinRT apps that work on Windows Phones and PCs alike. Microsoft could be hoping that developers throng to this tool, or it may look at other ways of making Win32 apps work on the phone.

Apart from all this, Microsoft is actually rumoured to be working on three different Surface phone models, which will target different types of consumers, businesses and even enthusiasts.
