Currently, Windows 10 is available as a free update to users. Millions of Windows 7 and Windows 8 users have already udated their machines to Windows 10. But millions of others haven’t done it. Now in a bid to push Windows 10 on more computers, Microsoft will offer Windows 10 as an automatic and recommended update through Windows update process.

Most users have set their Windows update setting to “automatically download recommended updates” so it is safe to assume that in 2016, most consumers will have Windows 10 on their computers, though not all may install it.

A report by The Verge reveals that Microsoft is planning to push Windows 10 upgrade pop ups on every existing computers. “A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10,” said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s head of Windows and devices. “They’ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10.”

While the Windows 10 may get downloaded automatically, Microsoft claims that the control button remains in the hands of the users. The company said that users would be able to change their Windows Update settings and stop the auto update.

Users who currently have Windows 7 and 8.1 will have to turn off their automatic updates to avoid the Windows 10 download process. Microsoft says that a user will get a free and full version of windows 10 if he or she completes the upgrade process before July 29, 2016.

According to Microsoft, currently there are 110 million users of Windows 10. The company wants to have nearly one billion Windows 10 users.
