Qualcomm’s Next Chipset For High-End Phones
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 845 chipset last year at its annual summit in December. In the whole of this year, 2018, we have seen several phones come with the Snapdragon 845 chipset, and overall, all these phones did a great job as far as the performance is concerned. They were fast and made the overall user experience very smooth.
Qualcomm is now all set brings the successor to the Snapdragon 845 to live. The chipset maker has officially confirmed to announce its next chipset at an event scheduled to take place between December 4 and December 6 in Maui, Hawaii.
Ahead of the official launch of the new chipset, there’s a lot that’s being talked about the chipset already. More specifically, what will Qualcomm call it? Previous rumours suggested that the new chipset could be called Snapdragon 8150, this is because it will definitely not be the Snapdragon 855. But now a new report coming from PCMag suggests that the next chipset from Qualcomm will not be called Snapdragon 8150. So what will be the name of the chipset? Well, that still remains a secret.
Possibilities could be that Qualcomm is gearing up to reshuffle its naming strategy for the second time. To recall, Qualcomm initially used to name its chipsets around S1/S2/S3/S4, the company later skipped to the current 200/400/600/700/800 naming scheme. And now, for the second time, looks like the company is prepping to shuffle its naming strategy.
According to the benchmark listing revealed in the past couple of days, internally, Qualcomm is referring the new chipset as “sm8150”, but this possibly doesn’t mean that the final name of the chipset will also be Snapdragon 8150.
During the three days long extravaganza of the Snapdragon technology summit, Qualcomm rumours suggest will be focusing more on 5G. Apart from Qualcomm, the event will see several announcements from the carriers, some smartphone companies, and laptop manufacturers.
In the 2018 Snapdragon summit alongside the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, the chip maker also announced its first full Windows 10 laptops running on Snapdragon chips. This year, as far as the rumours are concerned, Qualcomm apart from bringing the successor to the Snapdragon 845 will be announcing another chip specifically for Windows laptops which recently appeared with the codename “sm8180”.
With the next mobile chipset, Qualcomm is focusing on making a 5G commercial. Talking about the event, Qualcomm has mentioned that this year’s Snapdragon summit will be “the path to commercialization of 5G in 2019.” Meanwhile, some of the Android phone makers like OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Huawei, among others, have already announced to bring their first 5G phones next year, 2019.
