Robots With Human Muscles Are A Dream Or Live?
We are living in a time where machines are taking over the world. Remember the cartoon Teen Titans where a character is half human and a half robot? Yes, it was an imaginary character, but seems like not any more.
Robots that are being created currently are far more superiors to human. In comparison to human all, they lacked was the emotions and muscles.
After the humanoid robot like Sophia who said: I have feelings too. Researchers of the bio-hybrid field are working on robots that work with muscles just like humans.
Japan researchers of University of Tokyo Institute of Industrial Science firstly created a robot skeleton which they installed a pair of functioning muscles. It included rotatable join and electrodes for contractions. For the muscles, the team builds one using hydrogel sheet with muscle precursor cells called myoblast along with holes to attach it to the robot skeleton.
Shoji Takeuchi, study corresponding author said Once we had built the muscles, we successfully used them as antagonistic pairs in the robot, with one contracting and the other expanding, just like in the body,”
The research teams made the robots do two different tasks, one was picking and placing a plastic ring and the other was to pick up a square frame. End results were as expected. The muscle on the robot skeleton made it much easier and flexible for the tasks to be done.
Yuya Morimoto, lead author said Once we had built the muscles, we successfully used them as antagonistic pairs in the robot, with one contracting and the other expanding, just like in the body, If we can combine more of these muscles into a single device, we should be able to reproduce the complex muscular interplay that allows hands, arms, and other parts of the body to function.”
Yes, it may be just a finger now. But in the near future, we can expect a whole robot that works with muscle just like humans.
